Begin your hike on the trail near the amphitheater, turn right at the trail junction and cross the small boardwalk into the mature hardwood forest. In the spring, see a lush carpet of wildflowers here. Beyond the campground, the trail follows the South Branch Root River, one of southeast Minnesota’s best trout streams. Kingfishers often patrol this area. After crossing the road near Forestville Creek, stay left until the trail crosses the road once more near the park office. Climb through an oldgrowth oak and sugar maple forest to a ridge with views of the hilly terrain. This section of the trail is especially beautiful during fall.
